Google Ads Audit Checklist for Service Businesses
A useful Google Ads audit answers three business questions: where is the budget going, which enquiries does it create, and what should change first? It is not a scorecard full of platform warnings. For a service business, the most valuable findings connect account settings to the quality of calls, WhatsApp conversations, quote requests and booked work.
Start with a short, decision-ready review
Choose a meaningful recent date range and note any major changes to offers, service areas, budgets or tracking. The aim is to find the few issues that prevent the business from getting qualified enquiries—not to make every platform recommendation disappear.
Confirm conversion tracking before judging performance
Check that calls, forms, WhatsApp contacts and booking actions are measured once and attributed consistently. A campaign cannot optimise responsibly when page views, button clicks or duplicate events are counted as leads. Where possible, compare tracked contacts with the actual lead log.
Read the search terms, not just the keywords
Search terms show whether the account is buying commercial intent or curiosity. Flag irrelevant services, jobs, training, DIY research, unsupported locations and other patterns that waste spend. Add exclusions carefully, then keep reviewing because search behaviour changes.
Check whether campaigns reflect the work you want
A high-value emergency service, a general enquiry and a low-margin add-on should not compete for the same generic budget without a reason. Review whether campaign names, keywords, ads and landing pages make it clear which service and customer need each campaign is meant to reach.
Review locations, schedules and call handling
Target areas the business can serve profitably and check the location setting—not only the map. Align ad schedules with the hours when someone can answer or follow up. If calls regularly go unanswered, more traffic is unlikely to solve the commercial problem.
Compare budget with business priorities
Look at spend by service, campaign and device alongside the quality of resulting enquiries. A small budget spread across too many services can leave each campaign with too little evidence to learn. Protect the work with the strongest margin, close rate and capacity before broadening the account.
Make the ad and landing page tell the same story
The service, location and promise in the ad should continue on the landing page. A visitor should quickly understand what is offered, who it is for, why the business is credible and how to enquire. Clear qualification can reduce unhelpful contacts even when it lowers raw lead volume.
Prioritise fixes by commercial impact
Fix broken measurement and obvious waste before testing minor copy changes. Rank recommendations by likely impact, confidence and effort, then record what changed and when. That gives the business a fair way to judge whether the next review shows a real improvement.
This guide is general information, not a performance guarantee. Search demand, costs and outcomes vary by market, offer, tracking quality and sales process.
